What do I do when an answer stops or is cut off?

Read the red line under the answer. Stopped and lost answers can be asked again, and a cut-off answer means the question was too broad, so name one code and one state.

Recover a stopped or cut-off answer

Step by step

Before you start. When an answer ends early, a short message under it says why.

  1. If it says Stopped before the answer finished, you clicked the square stop button beside the question box. Ask again when you are ready.
  2. If it says Connection lost before the answer finished, reload the page to see what was kept, then ask again if it is incomplete.
  3. If it says the answer was cut off at the model's output limit, ask for a shorter answer, or narrow it to one code and one state.
  4. If it says the model declined to answer, rephrase the question rather than repeating it.
  5. If a line starts with Tool error, rephrase the question and ask again. If it says the model request failed, could not reach the model service or is rate-limited, wait a minute and ask again.
  6. A stopped, cut-off, declined or failed answer can't be saved, so save the complete answer you get when you ask again.

What you see. The new answer appears below the old one, which stays in the conversation.

Tip. A very long question is refused before it is sent. Shorten it or split it into two questions.

Wait out the daily Chat budget

Step by step

Before you start. You have a daily Chat budget, counted in the tokens your questions and answers use since midnight UTC.

  1. When the budget runs out, Chat shows a card headed Daily budget reached with the tokens you have used.
  2. Wait for the reset at midnight UTC. That is 5 PM Pacific during daylight saving time and 4 PM Pacific the rest of the year.
  3. Starting a New chat does not help, because the budget counts all your conversations.
  4. Generate brief in the Insights Library draws on the same budget and stops with the same message until the reset.

What you see. After the reset, ask your question again and the answer runs as usual.

Tip. The budget is yours alone. Teammates each have their own.
